Arsenal keen to repeat Gabriel Martinelli transfer success as 17-goal Brazilian ace eyed

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing young, Brazilian striker Brenner and the potential deal could mirror the one that saw Gabriel Martinelli join the Gunners in 2019. Martinelli holds an Italian passport through his father and that helped him secure a move to north London.

It meant that Martinelli did not require a work permit and Brenner is also believed to hold an Italian passport, making a switch to the Emirates easier.

The 20-year-old has impressed for Sao Paulo this season, netting 17 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions.

Brenner has also attracted attention from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Juventus and Lazio.

His current contract, which runs until 2022, is said to contain a £45m release clause but it is thought that Sao Paulo will be willing to accept an offer of half that amount as a result of the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

“First of all congratulations to Aston Villa for the way they played and the victory,” Arteta told Sky Sports after the game.

“After that, we performed below our standards and I have to say it’s the first time I’ve seen us play and we weren’t a team.

“I take full responsibility. We didn’t start well enough, we got away with VAR for an offside situation but we lost all the races, the duels and we were sloppy on the ball.

“When we created chances we didn’t hit the target. It’s a really bad combination.
