England player ratings vs Belgium: Jack Grealish shines to make statement to Southgate

Jack Grealish was the pick of the bunch for England, as they fell to a 2-0 defeat in their Nations League clash with Belgium. The Aston Villa star strengthened his claim to start for the Three Lions, despite the result in Brussels.

Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans gave the hosts the lead with a low drive that went in off the post.

Napoli forward Dries Mertens then added a second with a fine free-kick that gave Jordan Pickford no chance.

England had their chances but lacked punch in front of goal.

There was a sour note though for Southgate, host lost Ben Chilwell to a back injury in the first half.

Here is how the England players rated…

England player ratings vs Belgium – Nations League

Jordan Pickford – 6

Got his fingers to first goal – might he have done better? With deflection hard to pin it on him.

Kyle Walker – 6

Often a spare man at the back and could have made better use of that. Would have been better in a four.

Eric Dier – 5

Poor pass led to first goal, nearly sliced into his own net and regularly looked troubled. Poor night.

Tyrone Mings – 6

Deflection for first goal was unlucky and then didn’t jump for free-kick. Fine margins against top teams.

Kieran Trippier – 7

Superb cross for Grealish after first goal and almost as dangerous as the boot in the face that put him out.

Jordan Henderson – 6

Steady enough in the first half but sacrificed at half-time to give England more of an attacking edge.

Substitutes

Bukayo Saka (for Chilwell 38) – 6

Harry Winks (for Henderson HT) – 7

Dominic Calvert-Lewin  (for Mount 69) – 6

Jadon Sancho (for Trippier 69) – 6
