A Rolls-Royce-led consortium has struck a deal with Central Europe’s biggest utility group to work on plans for a fleet of mini-nuclear reactors. 

Prague-based CEZ is keen to assess if it could roll out a fleet of the consortium’s reactors in the Czech Republic. 

The ‘rapid assembly’ power stations would be manufactured in sections and are about 1.5 acres in size – about one-sixteenth of the size of a normal station.

CEZ boss Daniel Benes said the company had been focusing on small modular reactors ‘for quite some time now’. 

Benes said: ‘In the future, they can be an important alternative that we cannot ignore.’ 

They would be quicker and cheaper to build than typical nuclear plants.
