The number of substitutes allowed per game was reduced back to three for this season, but Guardiola is determined for that to change.

Speaking to Sky Sports post match, Guardiola revealed that he discussed the issue with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after the game.

Guardiola  said: ‘We spoke about five substitutions. Look Alexander-Arnold, an England player, is injured. We don’t protect the players and that’s why it’s a disaster, with this calendar. I will demand to bring back five substitutions to help the players, managers and everyone to do it.’

City are currently without Sergio Aguero, Benjamin Mendy and Fernandinho due to injuries.

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane, however, says that the rule shouldn’t change as Premier League clubs have already had a vote on the matter.

Keane said: ‘All the clubs had a vote. Every club would have their own agenda. I can see where Pep’s coming from but the clubs have voted for it. It is an issue but they did have a vote and they should maybe just accept that.’

West Ham manager David Moyes recently revealed that he has changed his mind on the issue and is now in favour of teams being allowed five substitutions.
