‘That is the worst ever in the history of football!’: Robbie Savage fumes as Leeds striker Patrick Bamford has goal disallowed by VAR for pointing while Gary Lineker slams ‘ridiculous’ offside decision

  • Robbie Savage slammed VAR’s decision to rule out Patrick Bamford’s goal
  • The Leeds striker saw his first half strike harshly chalked off for offside
  • His arm was offside after he pointed where he wanted the ball to be played
  • Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker also called the decision ridiculous

The decision to disallow Patrick Bamford’s goal against Crystal Palace for offside has been called ‘the worst in the history of football’ by BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage.

Leeds were 2-0 down when the forward thought he’d pulled a goal back but VAR ruled out his strike. Replays showed Bamford’s feet and most of his body was behind the deepest Palace defender, however, the striker had his arm outstretched pointing where he wanted the ball to be played.

Bamford’s arm was millimetres beyond the lines drawn by VAR and the goal was harshly chalked off, much to the dismay of Savage and Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker.

‘It’s the most unbelievable one I’ve ever seen. That is the worst ever in the history of football!’

Lineker was also incredulous as to how the goal had been ruled out, with the presenter tweeting: ‘That’s another ridiculous VAR offside decision to disallow Bamford’s goal. I actually loathe the way it’s being implemented.’

There have been several controversial offside decisions given by VAR this season, with Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson having a similar goal ruled out against everton after Sadio Mane’s shoulder was adjudged to have been offside in the build-up.

BT Sport’s referee expert and former official Peter Walton explained that under the strict offside rules, the correct decision had been made.

‘It’s a great goal but unfortunately for Patrick Bamford, under the laws he’s offside. As Robbie was trying to articulate there, (the VAR line) has touched his t-shirt.

And the t-shirt, handball law nowadays means you can score with that so any part of your body that you can score with that is in an offside position, is offside.

‘Patrick Bamford has suffered it there, so it’s offside.’

Bamford went on to get his goal in the 27th minute to make it 2-1 but Leeds conceded two further goals as Palace secured a 4-1 victory.
