Canada's Justin Trudeau leads world leaders in congratulating Joe Biden as he wins the presidency

Scores of world leaders are ignoring Donald’s Trumps claims that the presidential election is not over as they rush to congratulate Joe Biden on his projected victory.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was among the first to show their support for the Democratic nominee after he became president-elect earlier today.

The 77-year-old crossed the finish line in the race to the White House after winning the state of Pennsylvania, giving him the necessary 270 electoral college votes.

Biden, who will be the 46th US President, is also the most-voted for presidential candidate in US history, securing around 75 million ballots.

He will address the nation tonight despite continued protestations from Trump.

Dozens of other world leaders have since followed suit in congratulating Biden, as well as his running mate Kamala Harris, in their projected victory.

Among those to congratulate Biden was also Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, who was at the centre of Donald Trump’s congressional impeachment inquiry.

Zelensky has struggled to distance himself from US politics following a telephone conversation with Trump in July during which he thanked the American President for his ‘great support in the area of defense’.

He also said Ukraine was ready to ‘cooperate for the next steps,’ according to a rough transcript released by the White House.

Earlier this month, Zelensky claimed that no one had explained to him why $250million in US military aid to his country was delayed and dismissed suggestions that Trump froze the funding to pressure Ukraine to investigate Democratic rival Joe Biden.

But today, congratulating Biden, Zelensky wrote: ‘Congratulations to @JoeBiden @KamalaHarris! #Ukraine is optimistic about the future of the strategic partnership with the #UnitedStates.

‘[Ukraine] and the [United States] have always collaborated on security, trade, investment, democracy, fight against corruption. Our friendship becomes only stronger!’
