Phil Foden RECALLED to the England squad but manager Gareth Southgate does NOT pick Mason Greenwood

BREAKING NEWS: England recall Phil Foden but leave Mason Greenwood OUT of Gareth Southgate’s squad to face Ireland, Belgium and Iceland after they were both dropped for sneaking girls into the team’s Reykjavik hotel

  • Phil Foden has been recalled to the latest England squad by Gareth Southgate
  • The Manchester City star was dropped after September’s incident in Iceland
  • However, Man Utd striker Greenwood has not been included in Thursday’s squad
  • England face the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Iceland in the next two weeks
  • Reece James has also been included despite a two-match Nations League ban

Phil Foden has been handed an England recall after being dropped last month following the incident involving two girls in the Icelandic team hotel in September, as revealed by Sportsmail last week.

But there is no room for fellow rule-breaker Mason Greenwood in the party to face Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Iceland.

Manchester City star Foden, along with Manchester United forward Greenwood, were not considered for the games against Wales, Belgium and Denmark after being sent home in shame for bringing back two girls to the team hotel following the win in Iceland just days after their first senior international call-ups in September.

ENGLAND’S 29-MAN SQUAD

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell, Conor Coady, Eric Dier, Joe Gomez, Reece James, Michael Keane, Harry Maguire, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Tyrone Mings, Bukayo Saka, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker

Midfielders: Phil Foden, Jordan Henderson, Mason Mount, Declan Rice, James Ward-Prowse, Harry Winks

Forwards: Tammy Abraham, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling

But having axed the pair from his previous 30-man party, Southgate has re-considered the young duo for the forthcoming friendly against the Republic of Ireland and Nations League games against Belgium and Iceland.

Foden has been in excellent form for City since the start of the season and is known to have impressed England scouts, who have kept a close eye on his progress in recent weeks, resulting in his reprieve.

But Greenwood, who has not hit top form yet so far this season, has not been included.

Icelandic police fined the duo 250,000 Icelandic Krona (£1,300) for the rule breach during the coronavirus pandemic in September.

Footage emerged on social media of the women in question arranging a meet-up with the young stars.

In the video the Icelandic girls, one of whom is 20-year-old model Nadia Sif Lindal Gunnarsdottir, ask how the stars are going to sneak them into the hotel.

At the other end of the line, Foden could be heard responding: ‘What you coming to the hotel for?’, before Greenwood says to his team-mate in the background: ‘what do you think?’

Later footage then shows the footballers with the model and her cousin and best friend Lara Clausen, a 19-year-old law student.

One of the girls apologised for her part in the incident, saying she felt ‘really, really, really bad’.

Meanwhile, Southgate has picked captain Harry Kane and Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with his other forward options including Tammy Abraham, Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho.

Ings, who has five Premier League goals this season and netted against Wales at Wembley in the last set of international games, is to undergo surgery on a knee issue sustained in the 4-3 away win to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Reece James is in the squad despite his suspension for the Nations League games against Belgium and Iceland, meaning he is almost certain to play in the friendly against the Irish next Thursday.

Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips misses out through injury, while Harry Maguire has been picked despite serving a one-match ban following his red card during the 1-0 defeat at home to Denmark last month, meaning he will miss the Nations League clash against Belgium.
