Martin Lewis shares Green Homes Grant update – homeowners must be quick

Martin Lewis, 48, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com shared the update in his most recent newsletter, addressing the updates to the Green Homes Grant government scheme. Under the scheme, homeowners in England can get up to £5,000 to make their homes more energy efficient, including changes like insulation or double glazing.

His figures showed that 84 percent who had applied or tried to apply had been unable to do so because they could not find a suitable installer.

The government did have a tool where homeowners could find their nearest installer but the results often showing up were over 100 miles away.

However, outlined in Martin’s newsletter, is the update the government have made to make this easier.

The newsletter explained: “More installers have been added, with the Government telling us more firms are being added every day.

If homeowners use the voucher to install one primary measure, they can also use it to cover the cost of a secondary measure too.

The amount given towards the cost of secondary measures cannot exceed the cost of the primary measures.

Secondary measures including double glazing, energy efficient replacement doors, and heating controls.

The costs that are covered by the voucher include labour, materials as well as VAT.

How else can you make energy improvements in your home, reducing your energy bill?

Martin Lewis previously explained on his ITV show, The Martin Lewis Money Show Live that switching energy provider could help to save hundreds of pounds.

The money saving expert also advised people to compare energy tariffs online to be sure that they are getting the best value for money.

He said: “The key is your cheapest, your winner, depends on your usage and where you live – that’s why you go and use a whole-of-market comparison service, one that’ll look at all the tariffs, not hide those that don’t pay it and tell you your cheapest and don’t feel you have to go for the very cheapest on the market.”

Lowering the cost of energy bills is simpler than it may first seem.

You can switch the lights off when you leave a room, unplug or switch off appliances, use LED bulbs, turn down the heating and get an energy-efficient shower.

When it is dark and gloomy outside, it’s easy to forget that keeping lights on around the house and heating on throughout the day can amass a huge energy bill.

Even with the cheapest provider, energy bills can be extremely expensive, especially during the colder months.

Lowering the cost of an energy bill may be simpler than it first seems, turning lights off when you leave a room, unplugging or switching off appliances, using LED bulbs, can all help reduce the energy bill.
