James Bond: Lashana Lynch condemns her role as 'blow for gender equality'

She tells Harper’s Bazaar: “We’re moving away from toxic masculinity, and that’s happening because women are being open, demanding and vocal, calling out misbehaviour as soon as we see it. Lashana adds it was important to represent a truthful black experience, saying: “A character that is too slick, a cast-iron figure? That’s completely against what I stand for. “I didn’t want to waste an opportunity when it came to what Nomi might represent.

“I searched for at least one moment in the script where black audience members would nod their heads, tutting at the reality but glad to see their real life represented.

In every project I am part of, the black experience that I’m presenting needs to be 100 per cent authentic.”

The movie was partly filmed in her parents’ native Jamaica. And she says: “It has given me a deeper understanding.

“Understanding the privileges as a British-born Jamaican that my parents… gave to me because they came to England. In a way, it serves as a ‘thank-you’.”

Meanwhile, Rami Malek – new Bond villain Safin – tells GQ he was never going to turn down the role.

The Oscar winner, 39, says “It’s a 007 film, man. They’re a part of our cinematic history. It’s something I’ll look back on as big as it gets”. ??December’s Harper’s Bazaar is out tomorrow.
