‘It’s not looking good for him’: Roy Keane believes Manchester United’s players will cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job after Arsenal defeat worsens poor start to Premier League season

  • United have failed to win their first four home games of the season in 38 years

Roy Keane warned that Manchester United’s flops will cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job after another damning Premier League defeat at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Solskjaer’s 100th game in charge ended with a third loss in four league games at home this season as United made their worst start since David Moyes’s doomed reign seven years ago.

Former United captain Keane tore into the players after a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, and fears their failure could see his old teammate Solskjaer axed.

‘Ole will pay the ultimate price,’ Keane told Sky Sports last night. ‘Ole will lose his job working with this group of players as sure as night follows day.

‘We all like Ole, he’s a decent guy, but he will be under no illusion that the pressure now will be building the longer this goes on.

‘I never thought United would get anywhere near Liverpool or Manchester City, forget that, but at this rate they are in no race. They are just drifting.

‘We were kind of building this season up to be make or break for Ole. At this moment in time it’s not looking good for him.’

Keane criticised the attitude of the United players, who wore black armbands in memory of the late Nobby Stiles.

‘We keep saying have they have turned the corner, but this must be the longest corner ever,’ he added.

‘I’m just not convinced with these players. I don’t see enough characters in the squad.

‘I don’t see any leaders out there from the experienced players – I’m really worried for United.

‘You’re expected to roll your sleeves up, that’s what characters at Man United are about. Like Nobby Stiles, heart of a lion.

‘I don’t see it out there. I don’t see men out there. I don’t see guys I want to be in the trenches with. Guys you trust.

‘Ole in management, you have to trust the players because your job relies on the pitch. You’re going to trust those players out there? God help us.’

Sportsmail pundit Jamie Redknapp also expressed concern for Solskjaer’s future with United still in 15th place after failing to win any of their opening four league games at home for the first time in 38 years.

‘It will always fall at the manager’s door,’ Redknapp told Sky Sports. ‘It’s going to be difficult because it’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, everybody loves him. But he can’t carry on like this.

‘He came in as a stop-gap and did ever so well. But you look at where we are now after 100 games. What’s changed? Man United should not be in that position in the table.’

Solskjaer lamented his team’s lack-lustre form in the league which is in contrast to two excellent wins over Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig in Europe.

‘We weren’t at the races,’ he said. ‘Too many things that can go wrong went wrong for us. We need to get points on the board.

‘In the first half there were no tackles, no fighting. You have to create atmosphere yourself, and we didn’t have the tempo or intensity for that.’

Paul Pogba apologised for giving away another penalty with a clumsy challenge on Hector Bellerin that allowed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score the winner.

‘I cannot give a foul away like this,’ said Pogba. ‘Maybe I was a bit out of breath, it made me do this stupid mistake.

‘I put my hands up, it shouldn’t happen. The team has my back, but I am just hitting myself to give a penalty away like that.’

It was Arsenal’s first league win at Old Trafford since 2006, and manager Mikel Arteta said: ‘I didn’t want to tell the players we haven’t won here in 14 years! I kept it quiet – I tried to believe.’
