Drivers risk fines and invalidating car insurance by breaking simple winter rule

Putting on several layers such as a big coat and thick jumper could make it more difficult for road users to move which may be considered a safety risk. Insurance experts at Marmalade have warned that drivers may be unable to correctly look over their shoulder before changing lanes or see out of their window to check a blind spot.

In some cases, road users could be issued up to a £1,000 fine if the frosty obstruction is considered to be careless driving.

The Highway Code says road users must be able to see the road at all times so any covering must be cleared as soon as possible.

Marmalade has also urged drivers to check their vehicle’s tyres as often as they can during the winter.

They warn that bald tyre tread could lead to motorists being issued fines of up to £2,500 for each individual issue.

This means that four tyres which are all under the minimum tread depth limit or underinflated could see drivers issued a massive £10,000 charge.

Experts have urged drivers to keep an emergency winter kit in their vehicle at all times to deal with all eventualities.

This kit can incline a de-icer and window scraper as well as jump leads in case of a breakdown in cold spells.

Marmalade CEO Crispin Monger warned winter conditions can be a “bit of a challenge” for many road users.

He said: “As a new driver, if you are yet to experience winter conditions on the road they can prove to be a bit of a challenge.

“We thought it would be handy for new drivers of the UK to have this guide to hand should they need it.

“It offers some pearls of wisdom as we head into the winter months.

“New drivers haven’t had the best time over the last six months and many will be wanting to experience the freedom of being on the road and making sure that they can do that safely is a real focus for us.”
