Microsoft is getting ready to refresh the Games with Gold free game releases for October.
Similar to PS Plus, Xbox Gold subscribers receive a selection of free games each month.
The first batch of Games with Gold freebies launch on the first of the month, followed by a second wave midway through the month.
If you subscribe to Xbox Gold, then you can download Maid of Sker on Xbox One and Costume Quest on Xbox 360 from the morning of October 16.
Of course, due to Microsoft’s backwards compatibility feature, Costume Quest is also playable on Xbox One.
This also means it’s your last chance warning to download the current batch of free games, which include The Book of Unwritten Tales 2, and Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy.
Maid of Sker and Costume Quest join existing Games with Gold title Slayaway Camp: Butcher’s Cut, which is free until the end of the month.
To ensure you don’t miss out on the free games, just visit the Games with Gold hub on your console, or the official Microsoft website.
While it’s not exactly a stellar month for Games with Gold freebies, Maid of Sker looks like a decent horror game with a unique story.
According to the official description, Maid of Sker is a horror game based on Welsh folklore.
“Do not panic, don’t even breathe! Set in a remote hotel with a macabre and gory history, use stealth tactics to stay alive against a cult of sound-based enemies,” reads the official description.
“Inspired by chilling tales in Welsh folklore, do your best to survive and brave the nightmares of the Quiet Ones.”
Costume Quest, meanwhile, is a popular action role-playing game with a Halloween twist.
“Collect super-powered magical costumes and level up your hero in the monster-filled neighborhoods of Auburn Pines.
“Complete numerous quests, build up your party, and take down evil in the Halloween tale that will capture the imagination of kids and the kids-at-heart.”
As for the existing Xbox Gold free games, Slayaway Camp: Butcher’s Cut is the pick of the bunch, featuring over 300 spooky puzzles.
“Paying homage to classic ‘80s trash horror, play as Skullface, an adorably demented villain, out to terrorize camp counselors and any other blocky victims he finds.
“New dimensions of absurd terror and over 300 fiendish puzzles await in this isometric puzzle game.”
Then there’s original Xbox game Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, which is a third-person adventure game with a cult following.
“Inspired by the mythology of ancient Egypt, play as Sphinx, and his reluctant hero friend, the Mummy, as they travel the world to foil the evil plans of Set.
“Use stealth, agility, and special powers to find the stolen magical crowns of Egypt and save the world.”
