Ronaldo is currently isolating with the rest of the Juventus squad after another Juve player, midfielder Weston McKennie, also tested positive.

Wolves head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has regularly expressed doubts about the wisdom of playing football during the pandemic, ever since the club were forced to proceed with a Europa League tie in Athens in March as sporting events across the world were cancelled due to Covid-19.

Before his players departed for the most recent international break, Nuno said: ‘We are very, very worried [about their safety]. We always get worried when they go to their national teams. You try to pass on information about how they are but you don’t have the authority to determine anything.

‘Then there is the pandemic situation. They are in a different environment and we don’t know the different protocols [they will follow].

‘I am not the only manager speaking about that. After they get back they have to be tested and then there is a question mark over the result of the test. Sometimes you are only hours away from the game [when you find out]. These are tough moments for everyone.

‘The schedule of the national teams is not the right one. We wonder what the process will be for how they are tested. Everyone is struggling at the moment.’
