Back in December 2019 at the outset of the Democratic primaries, a Biden campaign adviser said his age would inform his choices surrounding a second term.
They said: “If Biden is elected, he’s going to be 82 years old in four years and he won’t be running for reelection.”
The choice isn’t one based on senescence, however, as campaigners have introduced it as a tactical manoeuvre to extend a Democratic legacy.
They predicted a young running mate would carry on in his stead after MrBiden defeats Mr Trump, making him a “transition figure”.
