Karius insists he has moved on from blunders which cost Liverpool the 2018 Champions League final

‘That was two years ago. It’s boring for me now’: Liverpool flop Loris Karius insists he has moved on from his blunders which cost Jurgen Klopp’s side the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid

  • Loris Karius gifted Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale goals in the Kiev final
  • The German broke down in tears after Liverpool were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid
  • He was replaced by Alisson in 2018 and joined Union Berlin on loan this summer
  • But the 27-year-old admitted he is frustrated he is still asked about the game

Loris Karius has insisted he has put his blunders that cost Liverpool the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid behind him.

The 27-year-old had a nightmare game as he gifted Karim Benzema an opening goal for the Spanish side before making a meal of an ambitious long-range strike from Gareth Bale to put the game beyond doubt.

Karius broke down in tears after the match and apologised to the Liverpool fans who had travelled to Kiev, but he was duly replaced that summer by Alisson, who has since helped the Reds to win the Premier League as well as Europe’s greatest club prize.

And the German – who joined Union Berlin on loan from the Anfield club in the summer following two seasons out on loan at Besiktas – admits he is frustrated that he still gets asked about his Ukraine nightmare.

‘That was two years ago. I’ve played over 60 matches since,’ Karius – who has not played for Liverpool since – told the Bundesliga’s official website.

‘I’m here to play well. That doesn’t play a role anymore – I long put it behind me. The only people who want to talk about it are the journalists. It’s boring for me now.

‘I’ve gained the sort of experience few have at my age, taken it all on board, positive and negative, and have come out stronger. I think some things, particularly here in Germany, were and are still taken too negatively.’

‘I don’t see a future for myself at Liverpool now and didn’t want to just sit on the bench. The Bundesliga has always appealed to me as a German.

Liverpool wanted £6million for Karius this summer but with no clubs willing to meet that valuation – despite enquiries from Montpellier and Hertha Berlin – he moved back to his native country on a season-long loan.

Liverpool have loaned Karius out for a year in the hope he can improve his market value and offer him game time given that he was behind both Brazilian Alisson and No2 Adrian in the pecking order at Anfield.
