‘I loved the process of the fittings actually, weirdly, almost more than the wearing it on the day. Because we don’t really… we don’t actually show the wedding – I’m in the wedding dress for, like, a fraction of a moment.

‘But actually I had so many fittings for it, I think about probably four or five, and each of one of those was several hours long,’ she explained.

Season 4 of The Crown is set to be released next month on Netflix and is set during Margaret Thatcher’s premiership.

Josh O’Connor, 30, will reprise his role as Prince Charles, while Emma will be making her debut as Lady Diana with Gillian Anderson playing Thatcher.

It will focus on the engagement and early marriage of Charles and Diana, along with Charles’ feelings for Camilla Parker Bowles – played by Emerald Fennell.

Emma, a recent graduate from Cambridge University, added that the costume designers even joked she should call her mum while trying on the dress.

‘When we were in the wedding dressing fittings, Amy the costumes person said: “You should really get your mum in here,’ – she said, “I think your mum should come. Because it’s one of those moments.”

‘I was like, “I’m not actually getting married” but also completely knew what she meant and was like, ‘”Yeah actually I really do want my mum here!”‘.

Emma’s interview comes after her co-star Josh O’Connor revealed he feels ‘sorry’ for Prince Charles in the upcoming series.

Speaking of the character he plays, Josh told The Sunday Times Magazine that he believes Prince Charles feels ‘wronged’ by Diana and as she has ‘an addiction to the spotlight.’

He went on to claim that he believes Prince Charles was struggling to express himself correctly due to his upbringing.

‘This is a family who have an intense inability to be emotional and he has inherited that awkwardness,’ he explained. ‘In this series there’s an awful lot of Charles trying to explain himself and not being allowed to.’
