'When City go for a centre forward, Calvert-Lewin NEEDS to be on that shortlist': says Shaun Goater

‘When Man City go for a centre forward, Calvert-Lewin NEEDS to be on that shortlist’: Former Etihad striker Shaun Goater insists Pep Guardiola needs to swoop for in-form England star in next transfer window

  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin has ten goals for club and country so far this season
  • City could be in the market for a new striker with Aguero in final year of his deal
  • Shaun Goater feels Everton striker would bring something ‘unique’ to Man City
  • Ex Bermudan ace believes Guardiola needs a more ‘physical presence’ up top

Manchester City should be targeting Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin says City legend Shaun Goater, with the Toffees’ hitman able to bring something ‘unique’ to Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Sky Blues are expected to go into the market for a new forward in the near future.

Current options Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus have been integral parts of City’s success over the years, however the future of the former is the subject of much speculation.

Aguero is now in the final year of his contract and has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal, meaning the Argentine could leave on a free transfer next year, however City still hope they can convince him to stay.

Shaun Goater who scored 84 goals for the Sky Blues during his five years at the club is convinced his old side need to boost their attacking options.

With Barcelona legend Lionel Messi still very much on the club’s radar, it remains to be seen if they will be in the market for a traditional No 9, if they are Calvert-Lewin could be a fantastic option.

The 23-year-old has started the season in remarkable form, scoring nine times for Everton and also marking his England debut with a goal against Wales on Thursday.

Calvert-Lewin’s latest impressive showing prompted Goater to urge his former club via Twitter to target the Everton star.

‘OK I’ve held my tongue on this one for a minute but when City go for a CF @CalvertLewin14 needs to be on that shortlist.’

‘He has pace, power, height and is improving every day. He can improve with technique but he would offer something unique in @ManCity team no doubt.’

Goater hasn’t been shy in voicing his opinion on City needing a more robust presence up top, he previously told Getinbet: ‘City have lenses all over the world but City will look with a view for a striker with a personality and the possibility of the player being able to be at the club for a number of years, not just for a season, unless you’re Messi.

‘When I look at City, I would just say a striker that has more of a physical presence to be adaptable. For me I think if City have success they may need to be more adaptable, rather than one up top and two out wide.’
