The president returned from hospital on Tuesday where he’d spent three nights being treated for coronavirus. Mr Trump was criticised for taking off his mask on a White House balcony and being driven in front of a crowd of supporters along with Secret Service agents despite potentially still being infectious.
Dr Bandy X Lee, a Yale University academic and psychiatrist, claimed the president “delights in putting people in danger”.
Sociopaths, who are diagnosed with anti-social personality disorders, have little or no concern for the rights and feelings of others.
They struggle to tell right from wrong, can treat others manipulatively and don’t show guilt or remorse for their actions.
There is no evidence that Mr Trump has been formally diagnosed as a sociopath by a medical specialist.

Speaking to Salon Dr Lee said: “In my 20-year career of working with prisoners and violent offenders to help contain their behaviour or to prevent their becoming violent in the first place, I probably treated a thousand individuals with [Trump’s] exact characteristics.
“So far, he has not deviated even the slightest from how I expected he would behave in a position of greater power than he can handle.
“Sociopathy is dangerous, in part because out of envy of other human beings for having human characteristics, it actively desires people to suffer and die.
“I believe it is not an exaggeration to say that Donald Trump delights in putting people in danger for multiple reasons.

“When he forces his followers into crowded indoor rallies without masks, for example, he is demanding they prove their loyalty to him with their lives.
“This is why I once compared his commands to those made to gang members and child soldiers — the circumstances are different, but the psychology is the same.”
Mr Trump confirmed he had coronavirus on Thursday and entered the Walter Reed military hospital for treatment the following day.
He came under criticism after having himself driven in front of supporters, with a driver and secret service agents in the same vehicle, whilst still recovering from COVID-19.

The president also removed his mask after arriving back at the White House and proceeded to walk past several people, including photographers.
Mr Trump’s White House is also refusing to contract trace its event last week where Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett was unveiled, despite several attendees, including the president, testing positive for coronavirus.
In response Dr Lee commented: “This is all in line with the bigger picture.
“Above all, the president needs to receive proper care, and from his behavior alone, he meets criteria for a locked psychiatric facility.
“Rhetoric and demonstrations of behaviour coming out of a powerful figure, furthermore, translate into widespread imitation and deadly results for the population.”
Mr Trump has returned to work at the White House since leaving hospital.
In a video posted on his official Twitter page he said: “I want everybody to be given the same treatment as your president.

“Because I feel great, I feel perfect.
“I think this was a blessing from God that I caught it. This was a blessing in disguise.”
More than 211,000 people have died in the United States due to coronavirus, the highest figure for any country in the world.
