Holland lost 1-0 to Mexico in their first game under new manager Frank de Boer, who took over last month after Ronald Koeman left to join Barcelona.

De Boer had hoped to prove the doubters wrong with his return to the Netherlands but Gerardo Martino’s side deprived him of that opportunity with a 60th minute goal.

It was 29-year-old forward, Raul Jimenez, who found the net from the penalty spot to see Mexico triumph over the Oranje in the second half of the game.

Wolverhampton striker Jimenez was taken down by Nathan Ake in the penalty box in the 57th minute before being awarded a penalty to put Mexico ahead at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

The Netherlands twice came close to equalising in the 88th minute, but substitute Luuk de Jong headed straight at goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera and Memphis Depay smashed the rebound against the bar from close range.

It is clear Mexico have found stability under head coach Martino since he took over in January 2019.

The result against Holland has seen the 57-year-old claim a victory in his first game in Europe at the national team’s manager.

While De Boer said he has a ‘bad feeling’ about the game.

‘Of course it’s a bad feeling. You always want to win,’ De Boer said, although he added he did not play his strongest side with an eye on two Nations League matches over the next week.

He picked two debutants, left back Owen Wijndal and midfielder Teun Koopmeiners. He also gave goalkeeper Tim Krul his first international start in five years.

The Netherlands will face Bosnia in Zenica on Sunday and Italy in Bergamo on Wednesday in the UEFA Nations League.
