MARK CLATTENBURG: I’d have told Anthony Martial and Erik Lamela to stop behaving like children… and booked both

  • Anthony Martial was sent off for Manchester United against Tottenham
  • The United striker got involved in a fracas with Spurs forward Erik Lamela
  • The Tottenham player went over easily when Martial lashed out in the first-half
  • Meanwhile, it was baffling that Luke Shaw was not sent off in the closing stages

Had I been refereeing at Old Trafford, I would have preferred to have a word with Anthony Martial and Erik Lamela, tell them to stop behaving like children, caution them both, and get on with the game.

Like supporters, referees aren’t fond of players who act as if they’ve taken a punch.

Lamela clearly exaggerated the contact, but Martial could not escape the fact he retaliated in the wrong way.

Anthony Taylor sent him off but there was no action taken against Lamela, who started the altercation.

For me, you had to treat them equally. Show them both yellow, or both red.

A caution apiece would have sufficed.

How Luke Shaw was not shown red in the final few minutes was baffling, too. There was absolutely no attempt to win the ball. He simply kicked Lucas Moura after the Brazilian burst beyond him. Shaw was a lucky boy.
