Having abandoned all modern elements, such as properly constructed walls and a roof, the hut reminds people that their homes do not keep them safe – only God does.
The hut would also have a roof of branches and leaves, and you should be able to see the sky through it.
This is also supposed to show Heaven, revealing the only real place of security being with God.
People would also take an etrog (a citron fruit), a palm branch, a myrtle branch, and a willow branch and rejoice with them, often waving them around.
