Outlander season 6: Duncan Lacroix spills all on scrapped Murtagh Fitzgibbons storyline

Murtagh was a firm fixture throughout seasons one and two of Outlander as he stood by Jamie’s (played by Sam Heughan) side as he married Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and fled to France after he was sexually assaulted by Captain Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies). However, after the Battle of Culloden, Murtagh only popped up for a short amount of time in season three when he was seen at Ardsmuir prison before he was sent to the American colonies.

Jamie thought he would never see his godfather ever again so was surprised to see him in an armoury in North Carolina.

Unfortunately, fans didn’t get the chance to find out what happened to Murtagh between his time at Ardsmuir and his move to Wilmington.

Speaking about the gap in Murtagh’s past, Duncan explained bosses wanted him to appear in season three.

However, those plans were scrapped to give him a bigger role in the fourth series.

“I would have liked, in an ideal world, to have explored what was happening to him in those intervening years once he was sent to North Carolina,” Duncan shared.

“All the stuff you don’t see happen on screen, and how that affects him and how that makes the character you see that comes back in season four.”

He had also hoped to share more screen time with Captain Jack Randall.

“He’s a very interesting cat,” Duncan remarked.

“I was talking to a couple of producers and they said, ‘Well, we want to keep you alive because we want some sense of continuity rather than kill everyone off from the first couple of seasons and just have Claire and Jamie left,’” he told Den of Geek.

The battle was in fact a tough shoot for Duncan, who told the publication everyone was “running blindly”.

“You literally could not see a thing so we’re just running blindly and your sense of distance just goes, so it’s just like, ‘Okay, any second now I’m going to come across someone,’ just out of the blue,” he recalled.

“Knees were flying into faces. People earned their money that day.”
