Joe Biden to get coronavirus test after Trump mocked him for wearing face mask

A week before the presidential debate, Mr Trump mocked his opponent for wearing a face mask and claimed Mr Biden had had plastic surgery. He said: “What the hell did he spend all that money on the plastic surgery if he’s going to cover it up?” He made the comment during a campaign rally near Pittsburgh in battleground Pennsylvania.

Mr Trump, 74, and his wife Melania, 50, have both now tested positive.

Mr Biden, 77, will now be getting tested himself.

With the next presidential debate scheduled for October 15 and election day just one month away, this throws both campaigns into disarray.

Mr Biden took to Twitter to wish his rival and the First Lady well.

He wrote: “Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery.

“We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the President and his family.”

However, Twitter users have pointed out how ironic it is that Mr Trump would mock Mr Biden for trying to stop the spread of the virus, before contracting the virus himself.

The President has also been accused of continually downplaying the severity of the pandemic.

In February, Mr Trump predicted that the virus will “disappear” and that “pretty soon” there will only be five people with the virus.

He said: ”I think it’ll work out fine.

“I think when we get into April, in the warmer weather, that has a very negative effect on that and that type of a virus.”

Instead, April turned out to be the deadliest month for the US, with 62,557 deaths in total.

According to journalist Bob Woodward, who broke the Watergate scandal and interviewed Mr Trump 18 times between December and July, claimed the President knew that COVID-19 was deadlier than flu before it hit the country, but wanted to downplay the crisis.

Mr Trump is quoted as telling him the virus was “deadly stuff” before the first US death was confirmed.

He said he wanted to avoid causing public panic about the pandemic.

However, Mr Trump has denied downplaying the seriousness of coronavirus, claiming in a televised event with voters that he had in fact “up-played” it.

It is believed that around 208,000 people have died of coronavirus in the US.

Mr Trump and Mr Biden faced each other in a televised debate in Cleveland three days ago, where they took questions from Fox News anchor Chris Wallace.

Ahead of the debate, Mr Trump did a vocal poll asking the crowd at his rally whether they think Mr Biden will wear a mask, with the crowd cheering in the affirmative.

He said: “It makes Joe feel good. Whatever makes you feel good.”

With a laugh, the President said of his rival, who is leading in the polls: “I think he’ll come in with a mask.

“The question is: Will he leave it on during the debate?”

Mr Trump also said he thought the former Vice President should take a drug test before the debate.

Meanwhile, Mr Biden said in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper: “Thank God I am in good health,” although adding that “anything can happen”.
