Donald Trump announces he and Melania test positive for coronavirus – 'Get through this!'

The US president announced the news in a tweet. Mr Trump posted: “Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19.

“We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”

It comes after one of Mr Trump’s top advisers also tested positive for the virus on Thursday night.

Hope Hicks was the closest aide to the president to test positive for the virus so far.

Ms Hicks travelled with Mr Trump on the Air Force One to the first presidential debate in Ohio earlier this week.

People who work in the White House are tested daily for the virus, including members of the press and anyone else who visists.

President Trump is also regularly tested, but it it not known how often.

Mr Trump’s National Security adviser, Robert O’Brien, tested positive for COVID-19 in July.

The US is currently the worst hit country in the world by the coronavirus.

The disease has infected more than 7.2million Americans bringing over 200,000 deaths related to the disease in the country.
