Tesco: How to access free food via app and make huge savings on groceries

Tesco is giving away lots of groceries free of charge via food sharing app Olio, as part of a new partnership to distribute the supermarket giant’s surplus food. Olio’s free app lets users and businesses offer food and drink which would otherwise go to waste. Tesco has partnered with the app to help customers make huge savings on groceries.

The supermarket giant has trialled its partnership with Olio at 250 stores so far and given away almost 195,000 portions of food which equates to around 36 tonnes.

However it’s now expanding the scheme across the UK, with Olio’s volunteers being able to pick up extra food which is close to its expiry date and upload it onto the app.

Even though the food is close to its expiry date, Olio is registered with the Food Standards Agency to ensure that it is still safe to eat when it is collected.

Olio Co-founder, Tessa Clarke said: “Our partnership with Tesco means that more people than ever before will be able to benefit from access to surplus food.

App users can then request it and arrange a pick up, this is done so via volunteers rather than from the retailer itself.

To help with social distancing, food items can be picked up from a front garden or wall outside someone’s house.

Of course there is no guarantee on the groceries that will be available but such items that have been added to the app include bread, biscuits and fresh produce.

There are also opportunities to become an Olio volunteer in which they can help deliver the surplus food too.

Tesco Head of Communities, Claire De Silva said: “We are very proud of our food waste work and our Community Food Connection scheme with FareShare helps thousands of charities every week.

“Right now we want to make sure that any surplus food is being managed and people who need it have access to it.

“The results of our initial trial were very positive and have allowed us to further roll out the partnership in our commitment to make sure no good food goes to waste.”

The partnership with the brand builds on Tesco’s existing food surplus donations programme, including its Community Food Connection scheme with FareShare, which already donates more than two million meals every month to food charities all over the country.

The supermarket giant has also recently bought back its Clubcard Prices promotion which offers customers huge savings across a large range of items in-store and online.

The savings can be made across favourite brands including popular ice cream Carte D’Or, Birds Eye and McCain.

Around 200 frozen products will be included with the launch, with more products across other categories being added over the coming weeks.

When you shop in-store, products included in the campaign will be marked with a promotional label so you can be sure to get the best deals.

Online, all items included in the sale will be highlighted in a box displaying the before and after price.

All customers need to do is scan their Clubcard App, Clubcard or fob at the checkout or when shopping online.
