What Chelsea stars think of Kepa Arrizabalaga after Liverpool as Edouard Mendy set to join

“But as I said, we are all behind him, we all support him and it doesn’t matter because now we need to look towards the next game.”

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has defended Arrizabalaga to the press although he declared that his current No 1 made “a clear mistake” against Liverpool.

He said of the keeper, who he dropped towards the end of last season including for the FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal: “We have to keep working, Kepa has to keep working. He has to have support around him, that’s very clear. It was a clear mistake on the day.”

But the Blues boss is set to bring in Rennes’ Edouard Mendy as his seventh signing of the summer this week.

A deal worth up to £22m has been agreed and the Senegal international will battle Arrizabalaga for the No 1 spot.

He is likely to immediately displace his new team-mate to alleviate some pressure on the underfire Arrizabalaga, who has conceded 11 goals from the last 16 shots on target he has faced.

And Chelsea could soon name almost an entirely new-look team with Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell yet to make their debuts due to injury.

Kai Havertz and Werner have both played the first two matches of the season and while the former has yet to make any real impression, Mount insists Chelsea need time to gel before they can assess where their ambitions lie this season, amid claims they should be fighting for the title.
