Donald Trump polls tracker: Trump closes gap with Biden – which state is key to election?

US President Donald Trump is taking on Democrat candidate Joe Biden in November’s election, and the polls have been shifting dramatically over the past few months. Now, according to one poll, the gap appears to be closing between the two battling presidential candidates.

The poll, undertaken by YouGov and published by CBS News on Sunday found Mr Biden sat at 48 percent, while incumbent President Trump was at 46 percent.

A similar survey in July had placed the Democratic candidate six points ahead of his rival.

The most recent CBS poll has a 3.7 percent margin of error, and in total five percent of voters have responded to say they don’t know who to vote for.

YouGov polled 1,220 registered voters between September 15 and 18.

Issues like coronavirus and the Black Lives Matter movement have plagued Mr Trump in the run-up to the election.

With six weeks left before the election on November 3, Mr Trump is behind Mr Biden nationally in every major opinion poll.

Another poll on Sunday showed Mr Biden ahead of President Trump nationally with 51 percent of the vote compared to 43 percent.

NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll was of 1,000 voters taken between September 13 to 16.

Which key state is crucial to November’s election?

One state which is integral to November’s election results is Florida.

Florida is a swing state, and since 1964 the presidential candidate who has won the votes in Florida has won the election.

However each time the votes have been counted the results have been close between the red and blue parties.

In 2016’s election, Mr Trump won with 48.6 percent of the vote in comparison to Hillary Clinton’s 47.4 percent.

Back in 2008, Barack Obama won with 51 percent, while John McCain took 48.2 percent of the vote.

When examining the demographics, Mr Trump is leading in the polls when it comes to the white population.

In total 59 percent of white people have said they will vote for the president.

However, Mr Biden has taken the lead in terms of Hispanic voters, with 56 percent pledging to vote for the Democrat compared to just 36 percent for the president.

The current margin in Florida is two percentage points in favour of Mr Biden.

The diversity in Florida is what makes voting so close between the two warring parties.

Sharon Austin, a professor of political science at the University of Florida told NewStatesman of Florida: “It’s diverse in terms of race and ethnicity and also ideology.

“Regardless of your position, you’re bound to offend someone.”
