Two security guards have been suspended following a punch-up at a tube station in Barcelona.

Commuters who rely on the guards to keep them safe looked on astonished as the pair rolled around on the ground at Placa Espanya Station on the city’s underground network.

One of the men was filmed overpowering the other after being pinned to the ground.

The guard who was initially on top received a string of punches to his face as the other man freed himself from his grip amid shouts during the violent tussle of ‘Get off me you idiot, what are you doing you d**khead.’

A spokesman for Barcelona Metropolitan Transport confirmed the men had been suspended by security firm Prosegur as part of an ongoing investigation.

Union sources told local press one of the men appeared to have gone on the offensive after suffering a drop in his blood sugar levels.

One said: ‘The one who seems to have had a health problem launched himself at his colleague and tried to strangle him, and the other man tried to free himself with his fists.

The incident happened around 9.45pm on Wednesday.

Police were called to the metro station but are not thought to have made any arrests at this stage.

One social media user tweeted Barcelona mayoress Ada Colau to ask: ‘Are these the people who are supposed to protect us?’

A witness added: ‘This happened at 9.48 on Wednesday on Line Three at Placa Espanya.

‘From what I saw the bald man threw the other man to the ground and pinned him down and the other man reacted in self-defence.’

Transport chiefs have also launched a separate investigation to the one being carried out by the security firm.
