Outlander’s Sophie Skelton reveals what she really thinks of Brianna Fraser: 'Challenging'

The affectionately dubbed ‘Droughtlander’ is predicted to last a lot longer this time round thanks to the coronavirus pandemic’s adverse effects on the entertainment industry.

Although the fifth season of the popular historical romance aired in February this year, the cast and crew have been unable to return to set to begin work on season six.

Luckily, the scripts for the new instalment are well on their way, so fans are hoping to see the return of Claire (played by Catriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) before the end of 2021.

In the meantime, the audience is still recovering from the emotional final episode of Outlander’s fifth season, Never My Love.

After both Claire and her daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) survived terrifying sexual assaults in the latest outing, they managed to reunite and rebuild their life on Fraser’s Ridge.

However, as Brianna allowed her despicable assailant Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers) to escape unharmed, there’s always a chance for the depraved rogue to make his return in season six.

Before the romantic drama continues, Sophie Skelton touched on how the traumatic events of Bree’s latest adventures may have impacted her character going forward.

Skelton explained: “I do think Brianna can be an extremely hard character to peg down. I think to understand her can be quite challenging, so it’s been good for me, for the audience, to finally get inside of Brianna’s head.”

She revealed: “When we first saw her in season two we only got a snippet of this young, teenage girl. And then spanning into season four, all the scenes with Tobias [Menzies] I loved.

“Showing the 16-year-old Bree before her father’s death, and how different she was then, and how more light-hearted she was.”

Although Brianna was introduced as the mild-mannered daughter of Claire and Jonathan in season two, she clearly harboured her real father’s adventurous streak.

Unfortunately, following in her mother’s footsteps backwards in time to revolutionary America came at a heavy price.

Skelton continued: “[Season] four was almost setting up for [season] five, and I think now that the audience know Bree so well, we are really going through the story with her.”

“To see all these things thrown at her and how she deals with them, it’s just been really, really rewarding.”

Since falling in love with Roger and forging ahead with her new life in the past, Bree has evolved from an average young student into a fierce explorer, and has now started a family of her own with the birth of Jemmy.

With season six on the horizon, plenty of new challenges await as their home at Fraser’s Ridge comes under threat from the American Revolution.

Outlander season 5 is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
