Kate Middleton’s ‘unique’ and ‘composed’ parenting mixes traditional and modern techniques

Kate Middleton, The Duchess of Cambridge has three children with Prince William. Prince George, seven, is the eldest child of the couple and third in line of succession to the throne. Princess Charlotte was born in 2015 and is five years old whilst Prince Louis is the youngest at two years old. Relationship and parenting expert Martina Mercer has shared how Kate’s parenting has a unique style which incorporates modern techniques as well as traditional.

The expert explained: “Kate Middleton has a unique parenting style that blends tradition with modern parenting techniques while adding a touch of professionalism with an impenetrable shield in the public eye.

“Discipline and order seem to be at the heart of Kate’s style as she upholds an incredibly powerful position and every single act is scrutinised, from her body language to her dress sense.

“She has an immense responsibility to ensure her children behave, which must put her under supreme pressure, however she manages this with style and grace, as would be expected for a high-ranking member of the royal family.”

While Kate has more responsibility than normal mothers, The Duchess faces less convention than a reigning monarch with present day standards allowing her to be more relaxed around her children.

Martina added: “She puts forward what she wants the world to see, what the public expect to see and hardly ever falters. She follows the traditions of the royal family, while also introducing a hands-on approach with her parenting that has rarely been seen before.

“Kate seems, to us, as stern but fair, as if she wouldn’t tolerate tantrums or whining, when in front of the paparazzi, she and the children have a job to do, and she executes this seamlessly and seemingly without much effort which begs the question of, how much training, discipline, motivation and incentives are required behind the scenes and in the lead up to these public appearances?”

A royal insider previously revealed that the couple have what they call a “chat sofa”, where they can calmly explain why certain behaviour is unacceptable.

Martina added: “Kate has brought the family into a new era with her parenting as she’s displayed love and affection in public, cuddling the children, laughing with them, rather than pitching them as stoic accessories and ornaments as heir to a kingdom.

“She obviously has a loving bond with her children, and with every appearance that love shines through. She treats her children as equals, as individuals of importance to her and William, and is keen to ensure they feel as though their voices are heard while letting them know they are so very loved.”

Kate and William are often pictured listening and speaking to their children whilst kneeling down as well as holding their hands or cuddling them.

Although there are no formal rules when it comes to showing love and affection in public, the Royal Family traditionally do not do so.

Martina explained how previous Royal Family members would have seen this as a weakness.

She said: “She blends traditional parenting with modern techniques, and is unashamed of the love she displays, which is refreshing.

“Previously, Royal Family members would view any display of emotion as a weakness, yet Kate displays this as a strength. It’s obvious, through her interactions, that she’s worked hard to understand her children’s wants and needs, and she gives the impression that behind closed doors she is very hands on and takes the role of mother seriously.

“It’s hard to imagine Kate following royal tradition where the nanny practically brought up the children. Through public appearances and displays of affection we can visualise Kate reading bedtime stories, negotiating with a tired toddler and soothing a princess to sleep.”

When it comes to parenting in the Royal Family, traditions involve hiring numerous employees to help out with the children.

However, Kate and William have decided against this tradition and opted for just one nanny instead, who the couple hired shortly after Prince George was born.

Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, who was trained at one of the most prestigious colleges in the UK, is often seen helping out with the children.

Whilst she helps with Kate and William and reportedly lives full-time at Kensington Palace, the Royal couple are known to be hands-on parents and are regularly seen taking their children to school.

The parenting expert went on: “In short, all parents can relate to Kate’s parenting technique in one way or another, and she manages her unique and difficult position with aplomb, giving us just enough of a glimpse, while staying professional and maintaining that stiff upper lip.”
