Chelsea boss Frank Lampard responds to Edouard Mendy transfer questions

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was tight-lipped when quizzed on Edouard Mendy this afternoon despite the Rennes goalkeeper’s agent confirming that a transfer is nearing completion.

Lampard has concerns over his No 1 Kepa Arrizabalaga and is hoping to bring in a new shot stopper to challenge the Spaniard for a starting spot.

A deal has apparently been agreed with French side to capture their 6ft 5″ Senegal international.

But Lampard did not take well to being quizzed on the deal.

“No update for you,” he bluntly responded to the question at his pre-Liverpool press conference.

When pressed further the former midfielder insisted: “I don’t want to talk about Mendy.”

“Nature of the world we live in is a lot of airtime for you to fill with rivalries,” Lampard said ahead of the clash.

“They can be scrutinised in every way. I have huge respect for him. What he’s done at Liverpool was incredible.

“There’s nothing in it for me. The competitive nature of the 90 minutes can boil over but respect for Klopp I have will never change.”

Chelsea are the favourites to disrupt Liverpool and Manchester City’s stronghold on the league this season.

But Lampard does not want to speak about the title race.

“Don’t want to comment on favourites for the title,” he said. “That’s a job for pundits.

“It’s clear to understand the quality of Liverpool and Man City over past few seasons.

“It’s going to be competitive up there but those two will be up there.”
