Death in Paradise: Will DI Richard Poole return for Death in Paradise season 10?

Death in Paradise was one of the few shows which wasn’t affected earlier this year by the pandemic as season nine had already finished. Filming has since started on series 10 where DI Neville Parker (played by Ralf Little) will get to lead his team for a whole season after being introduced midway through series nine. Could there be a chance of a familiar face popping up on the island though when the BBC drama comes back?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Death in Paradise.

Death in Paradise has been on our screens for almost 10 years and has seen an array of detectives working at Honore Police station.

But the show’s journey originally started with grumpy DI Richard Poole (Ben Miller) who was welcomed to Saint Marie to solve the murder of his predecessor.

Despite being reluctant to stay on the island, Richard decided to give the new lifestyle a go and remained there for three seasons.

This was until the beginning of series three when the unexpected happened.

While meeting with a group of old friends from university who were all gathered at Saint Marie, Richard was murdered with an ice pick.

So it was up to the new detective DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) to find the killer.

Much to everyone’s surprise, Richard’s murderer turned out to be Helen Reid, the sister of Richard’s former classmate Sasha Moore.

After being killed in a car accident, jealous Helen stole her sister’s identity and when Richard was starting to catch on it wasn’t his friend, she murdered him.

Miller previously admitted how initially “it got the worst reviews of anything I’ve ever been involved in.”

However, in 2016 the actor said: “Yeah, of course, I would [like to return].

“It would be great fun! I love the character, he’s fantastic fun to do.

“But there’s no talk of that whatsoever, to be honest with you.

“It was pretty final, I thought!”

While he may not be able to return full time, Miller could still return for a cameo appearance.

If the characters end up talking about DI Poole, it may be an excuse for a flashback moment which will feature the man himself.

Or could Death in Paradise even introduce DI Poole as a ghost for one scene to haunt Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington), the only current cast member who knew him?

Fans will have to wait and see when Death in Paradise returns for season 10 next year.

Death in Paradise is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
