The first step to cleaning your earrings is sterilising them.

Wash your hands thoroughly and pour some alcohol or vinegar on a cotton wool pad.

Run it down the post of any earring, but don’t use it on a stone or metal setting.

This will get rid of any harmful bacteria and make your earrings safe to wear.

Before cleaning the rest of the earring, you need to take into consideration the material your earrings are made from.

How to clean diamond earrings

You need to be careful with diamond earrings, so avoid using harsh chemicals when cleaning them.

All you need to do is place the diamond earrings in some warm soapy water.

Only use a mild detergent in the water, though, as anything harsh will damage the precious earrings.

Move the earrings around in the water to encourage the dirt to dislodge itself.

If there are stubborn collections of built-up dirt, use a soft toothbrush to clean the area with the soap water.

Rinse the earrings in clean water and dry with a lint-free cloth.
