The end of a long holiday weekend in Florida was marked with the lowest number of new COVID-19 cases that the state has seen in nearly three months, The Associated Press reported.
Florida reported 1,838 new cases of COVID-19 on Labor Day. The last time single-day new case numbers were this low was on June 15, when 1,758 new cases were reported.
To date, there have been 646,431 cases of the novel coronavirus in Florida, according to Johns Hopkins University.
The state has recorded at least 11,849 deaths related to the virus since the outbreak began, according to Johns Hopkins.
Since Aug. 1, Florida has been averaging 150 coronavirus deaths per day, which would make the disease the state’s No. 1 killer, the AP reported.
While Monday marked a hopeful day in the state, some health officials are worried that Labor Day weekend activities will cause a surge in cases as people get tested later this week, the AP reported.
The largest single day surge in the state happened a week after the Fourth of July, despite several large beaches having been closed around that time.
At a brief press conference Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis said he believes the state will continue to see new case numbers drop, according to the AP.
“I think that [the dropping numbers] are durable — they are lasting now for many weeks,” he said.
Most state beaches remained open through Labor Day, the AP reported.
