The Crown: Prince Charles’ brutal ‘scrapbook’ about royal exposed

O’Connor, 30, will portray Prince Charles for the last time this year – after which a number of celebrities have been tipped to take-over the role, including Tom Hiddleston, in the franchise’s final recast.

But playing a royal onscreen was no easy feat according to the actor, who previously starred in shows including BBC’s ‘Peaky Blinders’, Amazon Prime’s ‘Ripper Street’ and more.

He likened the Royal Family to the Mafia in an explanation of the hit’s success on the small screen – comparable to US Netflix dramas ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Succession’.

The star also confessed that he had a unique way of getting into character whenever he played the heir to the throne.

O’Connor told Esquire in August that he had taken photographs, clippings and cuttings of objects to put into a scrapbook, which he could then use to channel Prince Charles.

“Maybe it’s kind of over-the-top and maybe it doesn’t help me at all but I do it for fun, so who cares?”

O’Connor has found the portrayal of Prince Charles particularly interesting due to the difficulty of his position within the Royal Family as a “King in-waiting”.

He said: “For me, that’s the juicy stuff. The question of having to wait for your mum to die in order for your life to have meaning, and what that means for a young man.

“It’s just bizarre. Charles doesn’t necessarily want power, but until she does, what the hell is he doing? What is his existence? He has no purpose.”
