How to clean block paving

This guide from Paving.org will ensure your block paving looks good as new in no time.

Start by removing all pots and patio furniture that is sat on your block paving before you start to clean it.

This stops any dirty marks being left on the paving if you decide to move the pots or furniture at a later date.

Brush the surface to remove any loose dirt with a stiff broom to remove all loose materials.

Take particular attention to corners and difficult to reach areas like behind drainpipes and in water drains.

Or you could cheat and use a leaf blower, but if you do so, be careful to remove all loose stones and large debris first.

Remove any weeds and moss from the block paving by using a weed killer before you start to clean.

Always allow a few days to dry your weed and moss to completely die before you clean your block paving.

You will be able to tell the weed killer has worked because moss will turn brown and the weeds will wilt.

When moss dies it turns brown and becomes surprisingly loose from the surface of the paving joints making it far easier to clean block paving.

Wash the whole surface with soapy water or specialist block paving cleaner, depending on how dirty your paving has become.

If the dirt is light, you can simply apply a solution of weak soapy water to the block paved surface to lift the dirt from the surface.

As well as cleaning your paving, a specialist cleaner or using cleaners such as bleach will kill the weeds at the same time as cleaning the dirt off.

Gently scrub the water or cleaner into the surface of your block paving.

Once you have applied the soapy water or cleaning product onto the surface of the block paving gently scrub with a stiff broom to work the liquid into the surface and between the joints, helping to remove deeply ingrained dirt.

Once the soapy water or cleaner has been brushed into the surface finish by rinsing the block paving surface with plenty of clean water.

This removes the dirty water or cleaner and any leftover dirt.

After the block paving has had time to dry, replace any lost sand with paving joint sand at the top of the joints.

On a dry day, simply brush into the joints and keep applying the sand when necessary.
