Carabao Cup draw: Premier League clubs discover 2nd and 3rd-round opponents

The Carabao Cup Round Two and Three draws took place on Sunday as the country’s biggest clubs gear up to join the competition. Express Sport brought you live coverage as the teams came out of the hat.

The 13 Premier League teams not competing in Europe in the 2020/21 campaign plus Championship duo Bournemouth and Watford will join the tournament in Round Two.

Burnley and Sheffield United meet in, arguably, the pick of the ties in the northern section, while Brighton will meet League One Portsmouth in a south-coast clash.

Leicester host Arsenal in the tastiest third-round tie, the stage in which Champions League and Europa League qualifiers Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham also enter the competition.

The second-round ties will take place in the week commencing September 14, with Round Three action happening in the following week.

The draw is looming

It’s finally time for the draw after Brentford’s first-round tie against Wycombe Wanderers went to a penalty shootout.

The Bees are the final team to book their place in Round Two, but were made to sweat by the 10-man Chairboys in the first competitive game at their new stadium.

Brentford took a first-half lead thanks to Ethan Pinnock’s goals but Wycombe fought back after the break through Daryl Horgan despite losing Dominic Gape to a red card.

Marcus Forss hit the winning penalty in the shootout, which ended 4-2.

Carabao Cup Round One selected results

A string of Championship clubs have fallen to lower-league opposition in the first round.

QPR were dumped out by Plymouth Argyle, Cardiff were thrashed by Northampton, Swansea crashed to a 2-0 defeat to Welsh rivals Newport, Huddersfield lost at home to Rochdale, while Birmingham suffered defeat to Cambridge.

The first-round fixtures have taken place before the beginning of the EFL Championship, League One and League Two campaigns due to the fixture chaos caused by the coronavirus crisis.

Rewind

Manchester City won last season’s competition thanks to a hard-fought win against Aston Villa in the Wembley showpiece.

Goals from Sergio Aguero and Rodri inside the opening half-hour had Pep Guardiola’s men dreaming of a comfortable afternoon at the home of football, but Mbwana Samatta’s header set up a tense second period.

City held firm to claim success in the competition for a third year in a row – and they’ll be hoping to make it four on the trot in the 2020/21 campaign.
