Bill Oddie: The Goodies star, 79, 'very ill' with lithium toxicity 'almost fatal!'

TV star Bill Oddie reassured fans that he was “still here” but “very confused” in his latest social media post, after suffering from Lithium toxicity. The 79-year-old, who is best known for programmes such as Springwatch, How to Watch Wildlife and Birding with Bill Oddie, said he had been ill for most of the summer.

Bill, one third of comedy trio The Goodies, took to Twitter yesterday to give his fans an update on his health.

His post began: “Just so you know, I have been very ill most of this summer.”

The birder told his 78,300 followers the reason behind his illness was “Lithium toxicity” and that it was “almost fatal”.

He explained that he was still a bit disorientated and wasn’t sure when he would return to television screens.

One said wrote: “That sounds awful. I hope you make a full recovery and your kidneys are not addled by the lithium toxicity which I understand can be a lasting effect. Get well soon Bill.”

“Here are some fox cubs from my CCTV dashing through my chaos garden to lighten the mood.”

Another added: “I do wish you luck. Loads of it. I was given lithium in a misdiagnosis situation. It nearly killed me, literally. Hope you return to good health soon.”

A third fan recalled a previous meeting with the television star and wished him well.

“Bill, you look after yourself. I spent an amazing night in your good company at the ENO and the Mikado. You simply fizzed with good cheer. Never seen a performer so happy in his craft. I left with a glow that still warms on recollection. Fondest regards.”
