Piers Morgan opens up on heartbreaking interview with Vinnie Jones in a Life Stories first

Piers Morgan, 55, has interviewed Vinnie, 55, several times before and spoke with the professional footballer on Good Morning Britain after Tanya Jones passed away last July following a six-year battle with cancer. As the actor has just released a book about his spouse, who died at the age of 53, the presenter thought this would be the time to speak with him again since his life has changed so drastically. However, this will be the second time the famous face has appeared on Life Stories – something no other person has done on the ITV show.

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories has been on the air since 2009 and has seen the outspoken journalist talk candidly with a whole plethora of stars.

Though, no one has ever made two appearances in the hot seat as they usually reflect on their whole life in their original interview.

Therefore, the former professional footballer’s conversation with the presenter is even more of a rarity as he opens up about the loss of his wife and living a completely different life without her.

Discussing being back with Vinnie in a socially distanced arena – since the original interview 11 years ago – Piers explained: “Vinnie’s the first time we’ve ever had a return guest.”

Of the reasoning for inviting him back, the broadcaster said: “I knew Tanya for a long time and observed at first hand the extraordinary marriage that they had, through thick and thin for many years, and then ultimately their wonderful love story ending in complete tragedy.”

“I felt when I read this book that Vinnie has done, it’s just so powerful. So eloquent, so moving, so inspiring,” he continued.

“The last time I interviewed Vinnie on Life Stories, Tanya was sitting in the audience. But as he says, his life has now been two lives.

“One with Tanya, and one that he is trying to build now after Tanya. And I think that’s going to make for a very powerful show.”

The presenter admitted he did expect tears as his guest reflected on his life with his late wife but there was a reason Vinnie wanted to share his story.

In the short preview, Vinnie watched back his original Life Stories interview where he talks about his love for his wife.

Getting emotional and on reflection of seeing himself so happy in his marriage, the former footballer tells the presenter: “No, I suppose it’s probably the memories more than anything. Just a beautiful person, Piers.”

The actor has been praised for speaking so openly about his grief, with viewers getting behind him when he signed up to Celebrity X Factor last year.

Having had such a diverse career is what has made Piers so interested to explore the last decade with his guest.

The Good Morning Britain host said: “His life story is amazing. He went from being a hod carrier to winning the FA Cup and captaining Wales.

“Then becoming a movie star who has made over 60 or 70 movies with some of the biggest stars in the world.

“He is a remarkable character, but it will be a very different Vinnie who I interview ten years on from our first Life Stories encounter.

“He has now been tee-total for seven years, and his beloved wife has so sadly died, he has a very different life now.”

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories airs tonight at 10pm on ITV.
