Chelsea have made four signings at once with Kai Havertz transfer

On Friday night, Chelsea finally announced the signing of Kai Havertz to the world. The Germany international has completed his move from Bayer Leverkusen, with Frank Lampard hopeful he can be a Stamford Bridge hit. And with the player capable of playing in four positions, the Blues have effectively made three signings at once in the 21-year-old.

Chelsea have pulled off a major coup by getting Havertz, who becomes their sixth signing of the summer.

The 21-year-old completes his move to Stamford Bridge with the Blues previously landing Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr and Ben Chilwell.

Havertz is excited about his Chelsea adventure, too, saying: “I am very happy and proud to be here.

“For me it is a dream come true to play in a big club like Chelsea and I can’t wait to meet all the players and the trainers. Yeah, I am very happy to be here!”

Also ecstatic was Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia, for whom weeks of intense transfer negotiations with Leverkusen finally paid off.

“Kai is one of the best players of his age in world football, so we are very happy that his future lies at Chelsea,” she said.

“He has proven pedigree in one of the best leagues in Europe, he plays for the German national side and he is an exciting, dynamic talent. We are delighted to be able to add his versatility and quality to the squad before the season begins.”

And ‘versatility’ is the key word with Havertz.

He’s a special talent and, more importantly, a proven one too. Despite being 21 he’s already had a whirlwind career, being an important asset to Leverkusen prior to his departure.

He made his debut for the club when he was just 17 years and 126 days off, becoming the youngest-ever Bundesliga debutant at the time.

And the youngster has made plenty of appearances in the time since, featuring 150 times in four campaigns and scoring 46 goals in the process.

What’s particularly impressive, too, is that Havertz has shown himself to be flexible – capable of playing in four different positions.

Havertz is able to play in a flat midfield, alongside the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley once he gets up to speed.

He can also operate in a No 10 role, which was where he became so vital playing for Leverkusen.

What helps, too, is that the Havertz can be fielded on the left flank if needed. Chelsea are well-stocked for wingers but the option’s there nonetheless, especially with Lampard’s side having many matches to play this term.

And Havertz also has experience of playing as a ‘False Nine’ up top, which may benefit the Blues despite them having Werner, Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud.

It’s the No 10 role he’s expected to take at Chelsea.

But his versatility will come in handy and will undoubtedly be used and experimented with throughout the course of the upcoming campaign.

Havertz is hoping to learn from Lampard at Chelsea, saying after his unveiling: “Of course he had a big impact on my decision because I loved him as a player and watched him very often.

“And I think I can learn from him now he is a manager as well. I think he is a very humble person and a great guy and I can’t wait to play with him and learn from him.

“He was very offensive like me and he loves to score goals, and I love to score goals as well so I think he will help me a lot in my position.

“Also maybe on the things that I can improve and I can’t wait to work with him.”
