Steve Coogan: ‘Alan Partridge would get on like a house on fire with Nigel Farage’

Steve Coogan announced that the BBC have commissioned a second season of ‘This Time with Alan Partridge’ this week. The 54-year-old teased fans that the TV show will “end up in a strange and unexpected place” when it is expected to air next Spring. Coogan revived his most famous character in the podcast ‘From the Oasthouse’ earlier this year, who is known for gaffes and embarrassing moments. In an unearthed interview about Partridge, the star revealed the character’s political persuasion and hinted at a likely friendship with Nigel Farage.

Coogan has made no secret of his left-leaning beliefs and has regularly stood behind Labour Party members at rallies including former leader Jeremy Corbyn.

However, he claimed his most famous on-screen persona Alan Partridge, who he brought to life 27 years ago, would be more likely to favour the Brexit Party leader.

Coogan told The Sunday Post: “I think if he had a pint with Nigel Farage they’d get on like a house on fire.

“I think he would have struggled long and hard and I think he would probably have opted for Conservatives.”

Inspired by everyday life, he claimed to have a “bank of stuff” on his phone that will likely make it onto TV screens.

He said: “What I do is I just make notes in my phone all the time, so I might see something or just his voice pops into my head and I just immediately write it down.”

Coogan explained that situations when someone does “something slightly inappropriate or makes a faux pas” are fuel for his character.

He added: “[If] there’s a moment of discomfort or tension in a social situation that is a bit painful to be part of, I sort of weirdly get excited because I think ‘oh that was great, I must write that down.’”
