Bruno Fernandes reacts to Man Utd transfer agreement for Donny van de Beek

Donny van de Beek looks set to become Manchester United’s first summer signing. The club have reportedly struck a £40million agreement with Ajax which will see him complete a move to Old Trafford in the coming days.

The Dutch international was promised by Ajax that he could leave the club this summer should the right offer arrive.

United have been locked in talks with his agents for several weeks, however, things have moved very quickly today following progressive negotiations.

While midfield was not a priority for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, club chiefs were alerted to the availability of Van de Beek and felt it was a deal worth pursuing.

They were hurried into paying the £40m though after it appeared Tottenham were ready to table a late offer.

Van de Beek is predominantly a No 8 but can play as a No 10 too.

It’s the kind of signing that will also rejuvenate Paul Pogba, who is set to stay at the club following an underwhelming injury-ridden 2019/20 campaign.

Fernandes has helped propel United back into the Champions League following his arrival last January.

Before he signed from Sporting in a £48million deal, the club looked set to sign outside the top four.

Many believe United are around three or four signings from closing the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Van de Beek will certainly bolster their options and he is another top addition for the Red Devils.

Meanwhile, Fernandes recently claimed he is in regular contact with Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

He has followed a similar pathway to the United icon, having caught the eye of Old Trafford chiefs at Sporting.

“Of course, I spoke with Cristiano after I signed and he spoke very well about the club,” said Fernandes. “I spoke with him some days ago, again.

“Every time I speak with him, he asks me how Manchester is and if everything is OK.

“Everyone knows he spent a lot of time in Manchester and he thinks a lot of the club.

“He likes the club, I think he won his first Ballon d’Or here, so it’s a club who’ve made a big impression on him for sure.”
