EastEnders spoilers: Popular residents' future together 'confirmed' in power shift twist

Martin (played by James Bye) and Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) might not seem like the most conventional couple, given how frosty things were between them when the latter returned to EastEnders in 2018. However, just before the BBC soap was taken off the air back in June, the pair were starting to explore the chemistry between them. It has been revealed they have been living together in lockdown, with a huge storyline coming up for them in the next few weeks as the former’s estranged wife Stacey Fowler (Lacey Turner) returns to Walford. However, as they pursue their new-found relationship, will one of them end up popping the question?

Speaking with Express.co.uk and other press, Ruby star Louisa, 31, teased what’s to come for the couple and suggested a long future could be on the cards.

The actress said of her alter-ego’s new lover: “I think for Ruby, Martin is the sort of person that she’s always wanted.

“She’s obviously come from a terrible background and she’s been on her own for many years. I think when I first came back to the show, you could see that that’s the type of man that she wanted and that’s almost what she was searching for.

“So at the moment, it’s just all fun,” she added, before going on to hint about the complications the pair will have to face.

“Obviously, Stacey’s not been around, so that problem hasn’t hasn’t arisen yet but obviously, she comes back.”

“She’s gonna cause many problems and many issues and it will be quite testing to see if they are meant to be together or just how intimate their relationship is,” the soap star continued.

“I really like it. I really hope it’s something that moves forward. I think it could really work, they could become the next power couple.”

With Ruby having millions in the bank and Martin a member of one of the founding families of the Square, they look set to be a force to be reckoned with.

However, tying the knot and making their relationship official could provide them with the advantage to take over Walford and be one of the strongest couples to date.

Being in a relationship with his wife’s best friend is likely to cause countless problems, however, as Stacey will be gunning for both their blood.

Louisa added her character going after Martin is going to cause a rift between the two women and will test their friendship.

Discussing a possible confrontation between the pair, the soap star said: “I really hope we get to see that.

“For me, Lacey is the show for me. When I was there 15 years ago, we did everything together like a couple on the show, like a friendship couple.”

“So for her to be back it now feels like home again. I love working with her and obviously, we’re good friends,” the actress continued.

“But yeah, more than anything, I think it’s exciting to see a friendship that’s going to go through so much, as you do in life.

“They’re the only friends that each other have got, so it’s important that they have to come back together every single time because really, they’ve got nobody else.”

Given how much history there has been with Martin and wanting the best for Ruby, will Stacey sign the divorce papers, giving the pair the green light to get married?

EastEnders returns Monday, September 7 at 8pm on BBC One.
