How to make French Toast – recipe

French Toast is also known as eggy bread, Bombay toast and German toast, and can be served a range of ways. The recipe can be made sweet or savoury, depending on your mood. You can add berry coulis or fresh fruit and icing sugar for sweetness, or serve with ketchup, an egg or bacon for the savoury version.

The earliest known reference to French toast is in a collection of Latin recipes dating to the 4th or 5th century.

In this recipe collection, titled Apicius, the dish is known as alter duclia, which translates to ‘another sweet dish’.

Typically bread is fried in egg, and then either sugar or salt added dependent on preference.

Method

Beat together the egg, milk and a generous amount of salt and pepper in a shallow bowl.

Heat enough oil to just cover the bottom of a large frying pan over a medium heat.

When the oil starts to shimmer, dip the bread into the egg mixture and add it to the pan.

Cook for five minutes on each side, or until golden-brown.

Serve with tomato ketchup or brown sauce.
