France holidays warning: Paris unveils very strict face mask rules for all public areas

France is having to tighten its anti-coronavirus measures following a rise in COVID-19 cases. Yesterday, the country recorded 6,111 new infections – the highest number since early May. New local lockdowns have been announced in France as the nation attempts to stem the spread of coronavirus.

From 8am today, all pedestrians have to wear face masks in public areas in Paris.

Many areas of the city already had rules in rules regarding face coverings, but now they apply to Paris’s inner ring of Seine-Saint-Denis, Hauts-de-Seine and Val-de-Marne, too.

However, people cycling or exercising outdoors do not have to cover their faces.

Paris is just one of the “red zones” in France.

DON’T MISS

The number of these zones where the virus is in active circulation has risen from two to 21.

Authorities hope that stringent localised rules will prevent a nationwide lockdown having to be implemented.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) currently advises against all non-essential travel to France.

Anyone coming back to the UK will have to self-isolate for 14 days.

The travel advice is as follows: “The FCO advise against all but essential travel to France (including Corsica).

“If you are returning to the UK from France on or after 15 August, you may need to self-isolate on your return. Check the latest guidance for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.”

As for Britons who do head to France, they should note that travel is subject to entry restrictions.

The FCO explains: “Arrivals by sea and air routes will need to complete a ‘sworn statement’ (déclaration sur l’honneur) form self-certifying they are not suffering from symptoms associated with coronavirus and have not been in contact with confirmed cases in the preceding fortnight.”

The advice adds: “Although there is no restriction on travel from the UK and most European countries, travel from most non-European countries is subject to entry restrictions.”
