Tune in: Tiger Woods is coming to the Ozarks as his first public golf course opens

Instead, it’s the home of the first public golf course designed by Woods — based in Ridgedale, Missouri near the Ozark Mountains — which will play host to a Ryder Cup-style international charity match as its curtain raiser.

The Payne’s Valley Cup will take place at Big Cedar Lodge’s Payne’s Valley Course and will be contested between Team US vs. Team Europe on September 22, three days before the Ryder Cup — which was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic — was scheduled to take place.

Woods is partnered with Justin Thomas on Team US and the pair will face Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy who make up Team Europe.

All four competitors have been world No. 1s, are major champions, have won the FedExCup and have been part of victorious Ryder Cup teams.

“Payne’s Valley is the first public golf course that I have designed. I couldn’t be prouder of how it turned out,” said Woods. “It was an honor for me and my TGR Design team to work with Johnny Morris and Big Cedar Lodge on this spectacular golf course. I am thrilled that it will be featured during the Payne’s Valley Cup.”

Payne’s Valley is named after Payne Stewart, the Hall of Fame golfer and Ozarks native who died in 1999.

“The breathtaking beauty and pure majesty of my native Ozarks is something you have to see to believe. To be able to harness this unique landscape and make it come alive through our golf courses has been an honor that has been driven by passion,” said Johnny Morris, noted conservationist and founder of Bass Pro Shops and Big Cedar Lodge.

“Tiger and I have a 20-year friendship that started through fishing and has evolved into a great partnership. We look forward to showcasing this destination to the world through the Payne’s Valley Cup and truly believe we are creating ‘America’s Next Great Golf Destination.”

Woods has designed numerous courses before, but this will be the first course that the 82-time PGA Tour winner has designed that will be open to the public.

However, for this match, not tickets will be available to fans because of Covid-19, although all four players will be mic’d up throughout the match.

The course also features a remarkable par-three, 19th bonus hole, in which golfers “journey along a breathtaking, cliff hanger nature trail and through a beautiful natural cave system to return to the clubhouse.”

The event bears similarities to ‘The Match II’, a charity golf match between Woods, Peyton Manning, Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady which attracted an average of 5.8 million viewers. According to Turner Sports, the spectacle was the most-watched golf telecast in the history of cable television.
