Riverdale season 5 theories: Fans convinced Charles is behind video tapes after huge clue

Season four of The CW’s popular teen drama was forced to conclude early this year following the outbreak of coronavirus. Available worldwide via Netflix, Riverdale will be returning to screens soon to finally address the huge cliffhanger that was left dangling back in April. But has the identity of the sinister stalker already been revealed?

Episode 19, Killing Mr Honey, prematurely wrapped up Riverdale’s fourth season when the coronavirus pandemic forced production on the final four episodes to come to a halt.

In the final moments of the makeshift finale, Riverdale High’s over-bearing principal, Mr Honey (Kerr Smith) became the latest victim of the videotape killer.

A sinister tape seemed to reveal Mr Honey was stabbed to death by a gang of killers wearing masks modelled after Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) and his friends.

Had the series continued, Archie, Veronica (Camila Mendes), Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) would have wrapped up their investigation in time for the beginning of season five.

However, the final episodes will now roll over to the start of Riverdale’s next instalment before the drama hurtles forward with a time-jump of seven years.

Before the Riverdale gang deal with the responsibilities of adult life, there still remains the question of who could be behind the creepy series of videotapes.

Thanks to some revealing clues, some fans are convinced Jughead’s half-brother Charles Smith (Wyatt Nash) isn’t as trustworthy as he appears.

Charles initially joined the fray as an FBI agent tasked with taking down the sinister religious cult known as The Farm.

However, some dubious behaviour, including his romantic involvement with the deceitful imposter Chic (Hart Denton) have put Charles under suspicion.

Perceptive fans took to Reddit convinced Charles should be considered the prime suspect for the individual behind the latest insidious scheme to plague the residents of Riverdale.

Redditor Rj_is_crazy kicked things off and posted: “Whoever is doing the tapes had to have access to the Jason video, the Midge video and had to know at least some of the details behind Jughead’s ‘death’.

“The Jason and Midge videos were last seen with the police. Charles is the only one who knows about everything with Jughead, knows the core four, and has access to the police department.”

The first season of Riverdale concluded when a videotape revealed the real killer of Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines), shocking his sister Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch).

In the season four finale, the videotape killer continued to redefine the word ‘tasteless’ by recreating the horrific murder of Midge (Emilija Baranac).

Due to the killer’s penchant for recreating Riverdale’s grisly past on tape, Charles might have some explaining to do as he has full access to the town police department’s video records.

However, other fans refuted this claim and reminded the poster most of the core characters have had access to the video tapes at some point.

Another Redditor commented: “Charles is not the only one who had access to the videos. Betty had a copy of Jason’s murder on her laptop, Toni had a copy of Jason’s murder as well.

“If someone had access to their laptops in the past year literally everyone might have had access.”

As with the best murder mysteries, everyone will remain a suspect until Riverdale season five finally returns to provide some much-needed answers next year.

Riverdale season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
