China is ‘biggest' security threat to US as FBI warns Beijing remains ‘top priority’

Tensions between Washington and Beijing continue to soar as the two superpowers clash over COVID-19, trade and the South China Sea. The Beijing threats include the infiltration of private communication networks of US businesses and organisations, according to the FBI. The FBI warned China had been increasing its cyber-attack capabilities since 2015 by using their military cyber-attack and espionage resources.

The FBI told Newsweek: “There is no country that presents a broader and more comprehensive threat to our ideas, innovation and economic security than China.

“The threat takes many different forms, and it is the FBI’s top counterintelligence priority.”

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence said: “China remains a top focus of the Counterintelligence community and has been for many years.”

He claimed China has been coercing Chinese nationals living abroad to return home and compromising the US research on COVID-19.

Mr Wray said: “The stakes could not be higher.

“China is engaged in a whole-of-state effort to become the world’s only superpower by any means necessary.”
