Liverpool ace Virgil van Dijk forced off injured with nasty head gash in Salzburg friendly

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk was forced off with a nasty head injury in the friendly match against Salzburg this afternoon. The Reds were 2-0 down when the powerhouse defender was withdrawn due to the incident.

Nat Phillips replaced Van Dijk after a nasty head collision saw the former Southampton and Celtic man bleeding just above his right eye.

Jurgen Klopp was taking no risks with arguably his most important player and withdrew him from the action straight away.

The cut looked to be under control when he left the field and Van Dijk will expect to be involved in the Community Shield against Arsenal on Saturday.

The central defender was integral to Liverpool winning the title last season.

Liverpool struggled in the first half despite Klopp fielding a full strength side.

Neco Williams at right-back was the only player you would expect to be dropped for the Community Shield on Saturday in favour of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Reds had Rhian Brewster to thank though as two second half goals ensured they avoided defeat.

Patson Daka netted twice in the first 13 minutes to give the Austrian side the lead and leave Liverpool with a mountain to climb.
