Kate Garraway: Peter Andre speaks out on GMB star's heartbreaking news ‘That killed me’

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway, 53, returned to work last month while her husband Derek Draper, 53, remains in intensive care after contracting coronavirus in March. The presenter’s spouse was put into an induced coma after his battle with the virus led to further health complications. Ahead of returning to the ITV morning show as a host, Kate caught up with Piers Morgan, 55, and Susanna Reid, 49, to discuss Derek’s progress.

Discussing her children’s reaction to their dad’s ongoing health battle last month, she said: “For Darcey and Billy right now, effectively they’ve lost their dad.

“They haven’t, he’s there, they’re talking to him on FaceTime.

“He can’t respond, but you know he’s not a presence in the way he should be in our lives.”

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Peter Andre said the heartbreaking comment left him emotional.

He said: “She’s such a nice person… the bit that got me with her was the day when she turned around and said, ‘My kids have effectively lost their father’, that killed me when she said that, because of course I can understand that feeling as a dad.”

“I just pray that everything is going to be OK, I really do.

“It just highlights that not everyone is safe and some people who thought there was no virus, there are all sorts of things going on.

“It’s very real.”

She told viewers: “I’m actually not here next week, I’m taking a bit of time off to help Billy get sorted for secondary school… Darcey as well get into school.”

Kate went on to say she was also going to spend time with her husband in hospital.

She continued: “I just want to say thank you to all of you for absolutely being brilliant since I’ve come back through challenging times.”

In the same chat, Peter said Kate sought advice from him ahead of her stint on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! last year.

He added: “I’ve known Kate for years, she and I had good old chats before she went into the jungle because she wanted to know to what to expect.

“We’ve actually been in private contact me and her for a while, my thoughts are with her so much and her family.”

Elsewhere, Peter has been working on his latest campaign with P&O Ferries, where he recently took a trip to France with his children.

He said: “What a perfect first time to travel abroad since all this happened.

“They [his children] got up and got into the car and within a few hours they are on a beach in France!”
